Taipei 2010 Day 2 Part 2-Danshui(淡水)，Fisherman's wharf (渔人码头)

Its off to Dan Shui（淡水） for lunch and we took MRT（捷运） there..Dan Shui is the terminal station for Dan Shui line and its is consider pretty near to Xin Beitou. So it took us about 15min to reach Dan Shui. Seriously, we did not know what to expect from Dan Shui as Mr Love had not been there in his previous trips, plus I didn't do much research. Only knew there is a street here that we can shop n eat.

When we exited the station, we didn'yknow which way to walk, end up, I did what I knew best, find some 1 who look like they are going to Dan Shui old street and follow them all the way. If it didn't turns out to be the place we want to go, at most just ask for directions from there. It beats standing at the station looking like ah goons. But this trick had not failed me yet :0)..

Reached Danshui old street after 5 mins of walking and immediately, we set out to look for food as I am gonna faint from hunger. We were not looking for cafes/coffe shops to settle for lunch. In fact we were looking at the various stalls selling street food and decided to eat these for lunch. This is how we eat during our stay in Taipei and truthfully speaking, I loved all these street food!!!

Spotted a stall at the start of the street selling chickie n porkie chops（炸鸡/猪扒). Those deep fried kind, and they sprinkle cheese n chilli powder on top, making it super yummy. Mr Love n I ordered 1 chickie n porkie to share n try out the flavours.

While waiting for our food to be ready, I heard music, and Mr Love told me that its their garbage truck coming on our way. Real funny to see the  garbage truck playing  music 1..too bad I didn't take a video recording the music.

There is a slight difference between the vendors in SG n TPE selling chickie chops, that is, in TPE, they would not cut the chops into pieces for you while in SG, they will cut into small pieces. But nevertheless, the chops in TPE taste much better n its way cheaper than their SG counterparts..Porkie chops costs 50NTD and chickie chop is 45NTD at this stall..

It tastes so heavenly with the cheese and since the chops are not cut, Mr Love and I exchange the chops every now n then to eat. Lucky we r hubs n wife, how to do that with friends? We walked along the street while eating the chops and manage to find a place to sit out Starbucks outlet there n enjoy our chops. It was really spicy and the both of us finish the water we brought along. After finishing "lunch" we moved on again, this time to explore Dan Shui old street（淡水老街）.

I once watched a Taiwanese drama and they showed the characters buy this long long ice cream in Dan Shui. So here we are in Danshui and I told Mr Love I also wanna find the ice cream n try. I brought the smaller version at 10NTD while the bigger 1 costs 20NTD. Because of his tummy ache, Mr Love did not wan to eat. There is nothing special on the ice cream, in fact it tastes a bit bland to me but its nice to eat under the hot weather.

Walking along street, we came across a lot of food, since Mr Love is no in the mood to eat much, it is up to me to decide what to eat. Can't eat much too as I need to finish the food by myself. It is too bad that he is not in a good condition today, else I am sure we will enjoy the good food here. Next, we came in front of a stall selling BBQ squid. Glutton me wanna try it. Mr Love nearly fainted, he was super amazed by my eating ability and I ordered 1 only as he dun wanna share and as expected, it tastes nice.

Along the street, we went into a shop selling souvenirs and I was looking for something to bring back as a memory of this trip. I found a small pen stand with the word "Taiwan" and brought it back. I also brought something for Hwa Hwa here. We continue walking and came across a shop selling almond powder and Mr Love brought can home. He and my fil both love almond drink. Me? I was standing 5m away from the stall. Haha

We saw Naraya bags stall in Dan Shui and curiosity got the better of me. Went in and check the prices and found out that it is as expensive as the SG store. Didn't buy anything but took a pic of the shop. But the the designs they have were quite up to date.

After this we continue walking down the street, nothing special along the street as I am too full to try on new food. We side tracked a bit from the main street and accidentally ventured into their wet market..The vendors were all closing for the day already and there are pretty much nothing to see.

We tried searching for the jetty to take ferry to Fisherman's Wharf but to no avail. So I decided to go back to Dan Shui MRT and take a bus to 鱼人码头. I tot it will be a short journey but alas, it took around half an hr to reach Fisherman's Wharf lo. Also, the place there seems quite empty, with only a few small stalls set up there to sell some local food fare.

Was a bit disappointed with there and nevertheless since it took us so long to reach, we walked around a bit. Found 情人桥 and camwhore a bit there..We didn't manage to wait till 5pm for the sunset which was suppose to be pretty, hubs is feeling hungry and wanted to leave. Its only 4pm when we left.

Went back to take the bus to Dan Shui MRT before making our way to Jian Tan station（剑潭站） where Shi Linh market （士林夜市）is located. Contrary to the naming, you do not exit from Shi Linh MRT station（士林站） to get to Shi linh Night market. Luckily for us, Mr Love have been to Taipei before and therefore he knows the way there.

Taipei 2010 Day 2-Part 1- Martyr's Shrine (忠烈祠),Beitou (北投)

Rise and shine at 7am, I damn kiasu kk? And it took us nearly an hour b4 we went down for breakie at the hotel. Hubs is the 1 who takes long to get ready while I go back and sneak a small nap again. Breakie was nothing fantastic but we just make do with what they have as there isn't much shop opened for business in Ximenting at this early hour of the day..

Our 1st stop for the day is Martyr's Shrine（忠烈祠）。Nothing special, just wanna catch the hourly guard changing period that hubs is telling me when he 1st went there 3yrs ago. From the notes I got, it states that there is a straight bus from Xi Men area but then after 15mins of walking around, we could not find the bus stop that have the stated bus, and when we tried asking others, they were aso not sure where to find the bus stop for the bus we were looking for. In the end, we gave up and decided to take the train to YuanShan Station（圆山站） and from there, transfer by bus to Martyr's Shrine. Hope we will have better luck there.

Since it is a working day, therefore we are caught in the morning peak hr rush but I was impressed by the citizens of Taipei, they really form nice queue on the platform while waiting for the train and they will automatically allow the passengers to alight 1st b4 boarding. Tell me, when do you see this in SG? Shame on us Singaporeans!

Yuan Shan Station（圆山站） is 4 stops away from Taipei Station on the red line(Danshui line淡水线). Upon reaching there, we exit through Exit 1 and navigate our way to the bus stop, it is suppose to be quite near to the station de but because of some construction going on there, we took a big detour before reaching the bus stop. From there, it is easier to find the bus we wanna take. And b4 tapping my card, I asked the driver whether the bus will be going to Martyr's Shrine and asked him to alert us when we are approaching.

Another thing I like about Taipei's bus driver is, all are very helpful, and at every stop they will announce through a speaker to alert you the place you are at now. It is pretty useful for us and the good thing is, we understand Mandarin.

We finally reached Martyr's Shrine after 15min, and alighted oppposite the Shrine. Man, the traffic was scary, no traffic lights in sight and we have to jaywalked over to the Shrine and the worst thing is, it is a 2way traffic with no middle intersection, which means to say, we gotta wait for the coast to be clear on both sides before dashing over.

The weather today is hot, real hot at 32 degrees. We nearly melted under the sun and Hubs totally hate the weather there at this time. We were just in time for the 9am show and a huge crowd is already forming outside the door, blocking all access to the entrance.

The parade starts at exactly 9am and the as the guards move inside towards the Shrine, the crowd follow suit too except that we have to keep a distance from them, there are some other guards who will make sure the crowd will keep a distance away from the marching guards.

I got bored halfway through the marching, dun understand why the crowd keep following them. It is just slow march, the more interesting part is the start and the guards changing part only. I got bored after a while and dropped off the procession and start to take pictures of the surrounding. It is only now then I realised that Hubs is not by my side and I freaked out. There was such a big crowd and I caught no sight of him anywhere.

Gave him a call and realised that he is in the toilet having diarrhea. It turns out that he is feeling uncomfortable ever since eating the smelly tofu from last nite. But then, I was the 1 who ate most of the tofu, not sure why is he suffering from diarrhea and I am perfectly alright. 

Maybe his stomach is not use to it. Although I have brought medicine with me, but I have left them in the hotel room and hubs do not want to go back and retrieve, therefore we continue with the day's program but with a slower pace. For the rest of the day  he did not eat much but the good thing is, his diarrhea stopped after awhile, but still, I can see his face turning a shade paler.

The whole parade lasted for 20mins and I waited till they finish the guard changing ceremony before proceeding inside the Shrine to walk about. There was nothing much there, its all the history stuff about the revolution times, some if not most of the things mentioned, are alien stuff to the both of us, we have limited knowledge of history of Taiwan and Chin.

We left Martyr's Shrine at 10am just before the next guard changing parade is about to start and took a bus back to Yuan Shan Station. Along the way, we passed by Yuan Shan Da Fan Dian, which looks like an imperial palace from far, heard that it is the most atas hotel in Taipei, and it is located on top of a hill, and seems like there is no bus service to it, guess those who are staying there would be rich or important enough to be driven around ba..

Came back to Yuan Shan Station to continue our plans for the day. We will be travelling along Danshui line today, to Xin Beitou（新北投） where hot springs are located, Danshui（淡水） to visit Danshui old street（淡水老街） and Fisherman's wharf（渔人码头） finally stopping at Shilin Night Market（士林夜市). 

Our plan is to travel on different colour lines each day so as not to waste time going back to Taipei station to transfer. Hubs says he wanna drink Yakult to ease his tummy ache and off we went, in search of it at the convenient store located within the station.

The journey to Beitou took quite awhile as the station is located at nearly end of Danshui line, and we have to travel for 45min to reach Beitou and transfer to Xin Beitou. The waiting time for Xin Beitou's train is pretty long as compared to other lines. So while waiting for the train, we camwhored a bit on the platform.

The train to Xin Beitou came and it is different from the other trains in serving the different lines in Taipei. It was nicely painted with the aborigines of the Taiwan tribes. The train was fitted with interactive map on a bathtub model. Very nice and innovative I should say. It keeps us occupied throughout our wait for the train to move out and to Xin Beitou.

We exited Xin Beitou MRT station and realised that will need to walk quite a distance into the area where the hot springs hotel are located. Hubs is having some difficulty in walking under the hot scorching sun and the long uphill route. But he still presist on as we travelled quite a long way here.

The 1st stop was Beitou's Hot Spring Museum(北投温泉博物馆）, went inside to see see look look. A walk around the museum shows the history of the hot spring in the early years. This museum was once a public hot spring, with the pool now empty and the bathrooms now serve as a display to the guests visiting this museum. The design of this museum is inspired by the Japanese culture, the tatami rooms and all.


There is actually nothing much inside the museum but we did spend sometime inside camwhoring again. Whahah actually is me who love the camwhoring part. Oh ya, forgot to mention, there is no entrance fee for this museum. So its worth to go in n take a look enroute to hot springs uphill.

After visiting the hot spring museum, we continued our way uphill with no particular hot spring in mind. To be frank I did not do any research on the hot spring as I thought there will be a lot here for us to choose from. But on the contrary, we didnt see any other hot spring even after walkin for 5min.


We came across a public hot spring after walking for another 5min and decided to go in. The rates were also pretty cheap lo. I tink is 40NTD per person which is equivalent to less than SGD 2. But the thing is, you must bring your own swimsuit or you have to purchase 1 from them.


As this is a public hot spring, you will share the pool with all others. We nearly fainted when we went into the hot spring. There are 4 pools there with different temperatures of water which is in the open area, meanin to say we will goin to the hot spring under the hot sun in the middle of the hot summer.

Also, the changing rooms and bath rooms seems to be run down, so are the lockers. The best thing is, all of the patrons are elderly!!!There is only another group of 3 guys who I overheard that they are from Malaysia who were of our age. Guess they are also like us. Enter the 1st hot spring they see on the way..whahah..

Hubs say he was expecting to see hot gals in bikinis parading around the hot spring, not old ah mas in swim suits going for a dip in the pools. Whahah realli damn funnie. The thing is, we could not take any pictures in the hot spring, we went to take dip in each different temperature and quickly bath and leave the hot spring.

We left there at around 12.30pm and decided its time to go for lunch instead of finding another hot spring to visit. Besides, the weather is too hot for us to enjoy dipping in the hot water which makes hubs even more sick. Off we went to our next destination for the day, Danshui where we decide to take our lunch there as we couldnt find anything to eat in Xin Beitou.

Taipei 2010 Day 1 Part 2-Jiufen(九份)，Raohe Night Market(饶河夜市)

We brought the ez link equivalent card of Taipei-Easy card（悠游卡） to move and took the MRT frm Xi Men station（西门站） to Taipei station（台北车站）,which is 1 station away. But when we reached Taipei station, the challenge to to find our way to TRA (台铁）which is link to MRT（捷运）

 Man,Taipei main station is HUGE...i mean real huge as it is the interchange for all rail systems..TRA （台铁）which is the railway, MRT(捷运） and HSR（高铁） which is bullet train of Taiwan..Not to mention here is also the interchange station for all the different lines of MRT..Is really every line that will pass thru this station...

We finally found the entrance to TRA, but couldnt make out how to buy the tix..heheh aso, we couldnt see the timetable for the trains too..There isnt any explanation on the ticketing machine either..End up, we went to the counter and brought our tix there, asking the sales person on the timetable at the same time..Tix were pretty cheap though..55 NTD for 1 way trip to Ruifang which is a 45 min ride frm Taipei..

Train is quite clean and comfortable..Just like the MRT, with air condition n everything..We soon fell asleep inside..the 2 of us! Guess we were too tired as we didn't get a good nite rest the day b4..hehe the lucky thing is, we both woke up just as we were about the reach our destination..Gosh, i really dunno where we will end up if we were to miss the station as there were no map in the train to show the stations along the way..We rely on the announce made b4 pulling into the station..n while we were sleeping, we totally shut out the sounds..hehehe...

Exit the train hastily and cam whore a bit on the platform, as we exit the station, we check on the timing of the train back to Taipei, but I was thinking of taking the bus to Raohe night market（饶河夜市） instead of the train back to Taipei so train is just a back up plan..

The good thing about Taipei, is everything is well directed, as we exit to the concourse level, there is a sign there indicating the direction to go to Jiu Fen（九份). We walked out of the station, and cross the road to the opposite rows of shop as indicated during my research..There is a bus stop there where a straight bus will take us to Jiu Fen..

By bus stop, i mean just a plate there indicating the bus nos. Not like the Singapore style whereby there is a shelter. It just blends in with the shop signage..whahah Luckily, we read chinese, and thus is able to make out which bus to take.

The journey uphill took bout half an hr, its on a mountain top and the roads were pretty curvy, nevertheless, the bus uncle seems to be handling well. Jiu Fen is a old mining town, it has now evolve to be come a tourist attraction after some film use it as a backdrop. Nothing much, just a shopping street..but things here are pretty interesting, for i don't see it in Taipei also..even the food is pretty special, again I didnt see them in Taipei.

The weather is also more cooling up here and they have those little min shu (民宿）or otherwise known as homestay that allows u to stay for the night.I would not want to take all my luggage up here, perhaps the next time can arrange to stay here for a night with things pack into an overnight bag.

After 2 hrs of shopping, we brought "gong teng" and little souvenirs for my colleagues, and we made our way out to search for the bus which is suppose to bring us back to Taipei's Raohe night market. Turns out it was not too difficult, as i asked every bus that passed by whether they are going my destination or not.

The journey back was longer than coming and it took bout 1 n half hour, again we slept on our way back, simply too tired. Its time for dinner when we reached Raohe and Mr Love suggested KFC. Typical of him.

They serve the roasted chickie burger which was quite nice..again the only funny thing I find they n China have in common is, they dun have chilli sauce. Just tomato sauce..yikeeesss..

This is the 1st nightmarket（夜市） we visited in Taipei and this is the 1st time I've been to a night market..whahah Was very excited, after watching on TV for countless time, I finally stepped into a night market!!Damm excited can??

Although just taken dinner, but the glutton me still wanna try abit of snack, there is a stall selling some pepper biscuits or something like tat with a long queue, but we weren't interested, instead, what interest us is a shop inside a small lane which sells Smelly Tofu（臭豆腐）, I decided that we die die must at least try the lengendary Smelly Tofu since we missed out the last time in HK..

Took a seat outside the shop and ordered a plate of smelly tofu, and while we are at it, I ordered a bowl of Oyster Mee Sua aso, the mee sua in Taipei is usually mixed with inner pig organs which I dun eat. So decided to try this out...

The thing I like Taipei over Hong Kong is the pricing of the food.In HK, minimum amount we spent for the a meal at a super normal 茶餐厅 is at SGD 5 for a bowl of noodles/rice with maybe a compliementary drink. But here, a bowl of mee sua cost 35NTD, smelly tofu at 45NTD which totals up to SGD 3.70 only. Super cheap can.

After eating, we proceed to walk about the night market, were super full and we keep walking past food stalls that seems to sell super nice food, but I am too full to carry on. Brought a nice looking crystals pluto T shirt frOm 1 of the stall at 150 NTD. Whahah damn cheap but I only wore it once cause the stall owner say can machine wash but after I did that, the crystals can dropping off..Faintz...

Hubs brought a shirt here also, the stall auntie was very friendly and keep telling us to buy more and ensured the quality of the shirts but hubs say he is not sure about the quality, so he only brought 1 to try it out. Turns out that the shirt quality is really good, easy to iron, comfortable to wear. Whahah Hubs say he certainly will buy more when we have a chance to go back The auntie says she have been setting up the store there for years here.

Hubs later went to buy a cup of bubble tea（泡泡茶） to quench his thirst and dunno how he ordered, he got such a big cup lo..whahah damn funnie, we 2 had a hard time trying to finish the cup and didnt eat anything else for the night as we were super full le...

We decided to head back to the hotel at 10pm as we were too tired. Never sleep last nite and had a full day in Taipei once we touched down. Too tired. We headed to Song Shan Train Station（松山车站） and took the TRA back to Taipei station where we changed to MRT to Ximen station. It is pretty near actually. 1 stop away from each other.

As we were using their easy link card, we didn't really took notice of pricing of the trips but it is not too expensive I think and it is pretty convenient to use that card as all public transports accept it.

Reached Ximen at 10.30pm and Ximenting is full of life. Alot of street hawkers. Very tempting but then still we walked straight bak to our hotel.

Taipei 2010 day 1-Part 1-Flying off/Touching down

Our flight is scheduled at 7.20 am in the morning n as usual, we went to the airport the night b4, to wake there for till its time to check in..many may say y are we saving on the 50bucks taxi fare, my bro even offered to drive us there early in the mornin..but we tink tat there is seriously nothing wrong of doing this..after all, there is onli the 2 of us, nt as if i am hafin kids in tow, n moreover, the 2 of us are young, we can afford to juz stay 1 day overnight at the airport, although not able to slp well, but still we are able to take it, n we get to slp on the plane for 4 hrs while flying there..so yesh, we went ahead of our plan to stay over night at the airport...

We took turns to slp at the airport with hubs slping more n me doing the last min research for our taipei trip n finalising the details..at 4am, we went to burger king for their breakie and to check whether our flight has been confirmed..After checking in, we went to the gate there n continue to slp till its boarding time...needless to say, we slp all the way frm SG to Taipei...

It was super hot when we touched down in Taipei, and their airport, to be frank was not tt fantastic..in fact, it looked a bit run down..in fact, BKK airport looks way nicer than theirs..

As we did not book any airport trf, we went in search of the buses which we can take into town, there will bascially quite a few choices, but hubs say to take "fei gou"（飞狗） cuz i tink its recommended by his colleagues..we brought the 2 way tix in the end..

The bus was suppose to take us to town and at certain hotels, they do provide drop off..but they left out 1 detail, that is for certain hotel, they would require us to change to another bus, which is wat we did..they juz suddenly announced that for guests stayin certain hotel to get down n wait for our trf...we felt abit cheated can, cuz under the hot sun, we gotta move our luggage here n there...damn..n the 2nd bus tt we transferred to was abit cui...

Anyway, after 20mins later, we were told to get down at wat they claim is Xi Men Ding（西门盯）, n we cannot even see our hotel lo..damn, plus hubs says he has neber been to this part of Xi Men Ding b4 so he dunno how to navigate to our hotel..*faintzzzz*

In the end, we juz randomly asked some1 on the streets who told us to walk straight..Our hotel is right in the smack of XiMending lo..location is not bad to be frank, but the hotel was abit disappointing...It was not clean lo, as I can see stains on the table and in the toilet's mirror..The base of the bed is clean either,the cupboard, was pathetic..whahaha n Becuz i booked a deluxe room due to the fact that the superior rms are full, i haf a higher expectation of the rm. the size is still okie, but i cannot imagine the superior rm..

We settle into the room, changed out of the shoes and got ready to go out for lunch as it is ard 1pm oredi and i am straving...Hubs said he wanna eat Ah Zhong Mee Sua（阿宗面线） and he vaugely remember that there is an outlet here in Ximending, n we set off to search for the outlet.It didnt took us too long to find the shop n we took our 1st meal in Taipei - Ah Zhong Mee Sua..To be frank, i dun realli like it, yesh, the mee sua was nicer but the fact that they cook with pig's organs puts me off..

After lunch, we walked a few stops down b4 stoppin our tracks again, hehe i saw fried chickie!! whhaha Hubs n mine fav!!yeah..we brought 1 fried chickie and while waiting, i saw fried squid too..hehe so add tat to my order..whhaha..

Went ard Ximending while eating the food n brought a cup of bubble tea, tt's the onli 2 cups i drank in Taipei n it wasnt those milk tea kind, i think i brought Rose Red Tea..heheh..

We proceed to take the sub way to Taipei station to change to TRA as we r goin to Jiu Fen..

Next yr marks our 10th yr anniversary...hmmm means, i've given hubs my most prime 10 yrs n vice versa...its nt easy, all these while..but next yr, will mark the 1st decade of our r/s, a benchmark if u ask me...heheh n of cuz, it calls for a celebration...cuz it's juz an excuse for me to get new bag/ring/clothes/shoes blah blah blah..whahah i'm being honest with myself hor...

Hubs says he is plannin to buy a bigger rock for me as a gift..juz like wat he did in the 5th yr when he brought me a ring..hmmm i wore tt faithfully till changed to my weddin band, it was his love for me n i always keep in on my finger to remind me tt..

However, i have another idea, i dun wan a ring or gift, i juz wish for us to go on a trip, nevermind i gotta top up the difference..hehe, we will nt buy gift for each other, juz go on a trip, a trip to mark our 10th yr anniversary...hehe i planned to go to Japan during CNY..but then we stilll need to plan our leave...eheheh.

Although I have been to Japan before, but i still wish to make a trip there with hubs.The memories of visiting a different country every time are forever, better than a ring or any other gift..well, its in my plan to visit a different country every yr, thus next yr's plan will be land of sushi...hmmm if we are nt able to go in during CNY, think we will haf to push it bak to yr end as hubs is more fond of goin in winter..hehehe..

Guess it is too still too early to plan for the trip isnt it?so lookin forward to next yr...whahahah

Back from visitin grand father in law...

Ah gong has been admitted to hospital since monday and dad in law informed me on fri that he is allowed to be discharge today..so we were thinkin of fetchin him frm the hospital today..but this mornin, the hospital called n informed tat he is nt allowed to be discharge.but as they were speaking medical terms n perhaps in english, dad in law couldnt realli comprehen what they were saying..

Arranged with dad in law to go visit ah gong today,n if they are early, den i will go with them without hubs as he is still coaching today..but in the end, hubs' class ended early and we went on our own as bro in law is fetchin dad in law there...as jie n i were nt familar with the road in the East area, we went up takin a big detour n tok 35min to reach the hospital which is suppose to be 10min away...so much for the GPS which wun work in certain areas...

Know what Ah gong told us when he saw us? "y u all come so late, i tot no 1 is coming " n he got all misty eyes, look like he is goin to cry..i was shocked by his remarks kk..cuz previously, when we visit him, he keep askin us to go hm, but yet today, he was blamin us for being late..hehehe

he said tat at 6 or 7 pm,e ward was filled with visitors for others, but nt him..i tink he felt lonely n left out..aso, he was promised by the doc he can be discharged by today n yet he wasnt, n no 1 informed him..so he was abit afraid when no 1 visit him on the day of his suppose discharge...

we stayed there for an hr to chat with him during which he chased us to go off for 7times..whahah but each time, we are able to divert his attention to something else..aso, i tink he is still quite affected by ah ma's death..hopefully, he will be strong enuff to get thru these n emerge stronger... meantime, the onli ting we can do, is to provide him moral support...like i was telling hubs on our way hm, he is the onli surviving grand parent for us, the least we can do, is to do our best for his needs...hopefully, it will make him feel better...

well, i will be waitin for the hospital's call tmr as they promised to update me on his condition n the reason y he was nt discharge...if he is still nt discharge by tmr, i guess we will have to work out some time table n take turns to visit him so as nt to let him feel neglected..its gonna be a long wk i guess...
