Korea Late Winter Sonata 2015 -Seoul - Deoksugung Palace (德寿宫）

Since we had free time on hand it was decided that we catch the guard changing parade at Deoksugung which is located at City Hall station (Line 1,2) exit 2.

Had not planned to come here initially and therefore was a bit unfamiliar with the palace but since this is located on the same line as our accommodation, I figured that it would be great to come here and would not have to change to other subway line to get back to accommodation.

This is the only palace that sits along side with other western style buildings at its surrounding. The East-West fusion is unique to this palace.

Entrance fee is KRW 1,000. Guard changong parade is scheduled at 11:00, 14:00 and 15:30. The palace is closed on every mon.

The palace orginally belonged to brother of King Seongjong of the Joseon Dynasty and it only became a proper palace when Gwanghaegun ascended to the throne. Since I am watching The King's face, Gwanghaegun rings a bell. Muhaha. Learnt history through TV serials.

The 1st impression of this palace is, it is huge! Perhaps because we live the ever compact Singapore, any place of such vast area is unseen in our country.

Actually I was pretty envy over countries who have such deep history. Always love checking these out when I am in the country. This is also why I would prefer Beijing to Shanghai since the former had more historic sites while Shanghai is a very well developed city.

The thing about the palace various halls are all empty. No furniture were inside the halls. No tables, no chairs, no cupboards, no tables, nothing.

Funny isn't it. I wonder where had all the artifacts went to.

There was only a throne left in 1 of the hall where the king hold audience with his subjects or visitors.

Without the furnishings, the palace look kinda sad. It like big empty houses standing on vast land and nothing much to see except for the architectures which we were not very good at admiring. But since we had tons of time to kill before the guard changing parade, we toured the whole palace.

There was this parade square outside the audience hall where stone plates of different ranks of the officials are engraved on it and officials got to line up as per their rank. The smaller the rank, the further they are from the main hall.

There are some display of olden time weapons at one of the gate. One of it that caught our attention is it was able to fire a whole lot of arrows( if I am not wrong) at one go on a cart like vehicle.

 

 

The we came across a hall which looks too modern to be in Joseon era. The decoration reminds us a bit like Malay architecture.

But in actual fact this hall which Emperor Gojong use to enjoy coffee with foreign diplomats is built by a Russian architect.

We roamed around the palace to wait for time to pass for the guard changing parade. Went out to the main gate to stand a place for a good view of the parade.

The parade starts exactly at 2pm with a announcement in Korea, Chinese, English and Japanese language.

The Royal Guard changing ceremony here reenacts exactly as what it used to be held in the olden Joseon days with guards wearing traditional clothes and carrying traditional weapons and playing traditional instruments.

It was a grand ceremony and no details were spared as there was an instructor there to guide the performers even as they stood there at ease during part of the ceremony.

At least we managed to catch one guard changing ceremony today which was our initial plan. It was great to have spend some time here to check Korean history but be warned about the lack of furnishing.

If you are interested in look at artifacts of Joseon Dynasty, you will get to see more at the National Museum than the palaces.

Youth Over Flowers/花样青春/꽃보다 청춘

Another spin-off from Grandpa over flowers- Youth Over flowers debut with 3 singers-songwriters in their 40s touring Peru. I wasn't that interested in watching the show initially since :

1). I didn't know who the 3 guys featured
2). 40s isn't exactly youth to me
3). I am not interested in seeing Peru.

Ok, so I didn't plan to watch this show until  I stumbled across an article that says the 3 guys starring in Reply Me 1994 are cast in the 2nd part of Youth Over Flowers.

Woo..Really Woo. Now it got me really interested.

Hehe I admit I am superficial. Gonna watch the show only when these guys got cast. Hehe.

So, I started watching only after episode 7 when these guys started their Laos tour. Seriously, I never knew Laos was so pretty till I saw episode 8 of the show. Blue Lagoon was really captivating though I think this will never be my holiday destination any time soon. Hehe.

I really admire NA PD's wit after learning how he tricked the 3 guys on going on the trip. They basically got tricked together and started the tour without any luggage and minimal allowances. But since they were much younger, they are more open to challenges. Kudos to their good nature in accepting and overcoming whatever came in their way.

I think I would never start a trip without any planning especially when language is a barrier. Even with my annual trips to Taiwan, I make sure I know my way well around the places we are visiting and I ALWAYS over pack.

Anyways, I love the show already after 2 episodes. Never knew Chilbongie is so motherly, Haitai is a bit sua ku and Binggeure is such a cutie pie.

Their friendship from Reply Me 1994 is pretty evident in this show too. But it would nicer if Sseureki & Samcheonpo are joining, that would really be an interesting tour.

Of course it would not hurt to have eye candies on the show with the guys going topless in some scene. I am definitely sticking to this show till it ends.

Trying hard

Following results from my gynae check up, I decided that there should be changes to my lifestyle so as to prepare a healthy body for conceiving. This decision should be made long ago but somehow I got lost somewhere.

I had always tried to exercise a bit here and there with no fixed timetable. But is was just not  enough for me to maintain the weight with my current eating habits (since I don't agree on going on a diet).

Given my daily schedule it is quite impossible to go for cycling or a slow jog after reaching home. Most of the time, I would need take dinner as I am famished by the time I hit home at 7.30pm.

One day, a solution just dropped from the sky when my colleague mentioned that she is following the video of Jung Da Yeon whose figureobics (combination of aerobics & dance move) you can do in the comfort of your home no matter what time is it, rain or shine.

The idea was shelved for quite some time until recently I decided to give it a try and google the videos. It might look easy but when you really try out the moves, its a miracle if you can complete the 30 exercises at 1 go. My best timing was 20mins and I feel like dying already.

So I try not to stress my body too much since it will hurt the next day. I would usually start with 1 of her stretching video for 20min and then continue for 20mins froma figureobics videos before stopping for a rest and determine whether I can continue or not. More often than not, it's the ultimate for me and I would stop for the day.

I do not have the luxury for doing these everyday but I try to do it every 3 days hoping to lost a bit of weight or at least tone up the body. My colleague says she does it everyday for 30mins and she really slimmed down but she did go on a strict diet along with the exercise.

For my case, I am not looking at such extreme measures rather I just need something to keep me moving and stretch my body. So far, it had been 2 weeks since I started the exercises. I certainly sleep better down since I will be dead tired from the exercise.

The reason for 3 days break is also due to body ache, haha they say if your body aches after the exercises it meant that you have stretch that part well? I certainly hope so..

Let's hope I can maintain the current schedule and hopefully shed some extra weight that I put on for the past 2 years. Fighting!

Answer me 1997

This is suppose to be the first installment of Answer Me series but by chance I watched the 2nd installment 1st though there are no links between the 2 shows.

Answer Me 1997 is set in Busan telling stories of 6 high school students that happened when there were 18. Similar to Answer Me 1994 or vice versa, the story moved back and forth their present life in 2012 and 1997 and leave you guessing the love line and only announcing in the last episode.

This show is seriously good and even better than its sequel, the only thing is per episode is only 30min. Too short in my opinion.

Love how the lead actor secretly carried a torch for the lead actress all the while irritating the hell out of her unintentionally. When he eventually muster up the courage to confess, his brother beat him to it and he cowardly or should I say nobly backed out of the love triangle and avoid meeting her for 6 years. The story continues after they met 6 years later and the things that happen and eventually leads to the couple getting together.

I especially love the lead actress of her portray of being sassy and her funny life long dream of marrying her idol which nearly drove her dad to his death. I never quite understand how these fan girls got so crazy over their idols since my mum totally make sure I am never one of these fan.

She threaten to kill us from young should she catch us doing crazy things because of idols. Because of her constant threatening, I believed that the 3 of us never got the nerve to do anything and eventually grew out of the phase of idolizing someone. Haha.

The parents in this show are the same as the pair in Answer Me 1994 and yes, they play a part in making the show more interesting than it already was. The constant bickering between dad and daughter but unspoken love when the dad was diagnosed with cancer was a superb performance by the casts.

Oh and I stumbled across a new Korean singer in this show, the lead actor -Seo In Guk. I think he sang in episode 12 and found him pretty good in singing. Later then I know he was a singer. I actually thought he was an actor since I saw another show with him being the lead actor too.

Well, watching this show certainly brighten up my otherwise low period recently. Now, I would have to search another show to watch to pass time.

After thoughts

Was hooked on watching 슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다(Superman is back) and managed to watch the 1st 16 episodes within these few days.

Many a time, I would end up crying at some part of the show. Watching how the dad handles the kids and grew closer with them trudges my heartstrings.

Like the twin's dad who cried after his twins were rushed to the ER after excessive crying. It was so heartbreaking to see the twins cried so hard and it was equally heartbreaking to see a full grown up man crying in the middle of the night while thinking back the day's events.

Or like how the innocent Haru shouted into the sky to her grandpa telling him she missed him. Her dad was so moved by her that you can literally see him fighting back his tears. Since I was watching the show at home, I have the luxury of letting my tears flow freely.

I am not a cry baby to start with but I was really moved by the show.

Sometimes, it would make me wonder how nice it would be if our baby is born and Mr Love is able to do all the things the dad had done with their kids in the show. Watching him grow up and making memories along the way. How nice it would be.

Perhaps it is near to the 2th anniversary of death of Xiaobao and it makes me more vulnerable while watching this show.

Regardless of what, I love watching this show and the tears and laughter it have brought to me.

I look forward to the day where we can have a child of our own to create the various memories like the parents did in this show.

Superman is back;슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다; 超人回来了

I wanted watch this show after reading an article about the cutie pie Choo Sarang in a I-weekly write up.

I couldn't find it on my apps but accidentally stumbled across when I realised I have KBS channel on my cable and I got to watch an episode and fell in love with Choo Sarang.

She is really very adorable. I hope if I ever had a daughter, I hope she will be as cute as Choo Sarang. Haha.

 Back to show, its show casing how dads handle their kids when mom is not around.

The twins featured are also super cute with one bullying the other. Haha. The dad had his hands full while handling the 2 kids. Its also funny to see the kids ignoring their dad when mum is around. Hahah

In short I love this show though there are other like "Dad, where are we going?"

Maybe it's the kids who are featured here appeals more to me and I love to see the interactions between the dads and the kids.

Now I need to figure out how to go find the previous 29 episodes of the show.

Grandpa over flowers in Spain

Just finished watching the latest season of Grandpa Over Flowers and the country they visited this time round is Spain.

With 2 other trips under their belt, the production team went out a little to make the trip more difficult for the halbaes with reduced travelling allowance. The halbaes were no pushover too, threatening to walk out on the show. The most epic scene would be Na PD scamming the oldest halbae to accept the reduced allowance without telling him about the reduced amount. Seriously funny when they found out.

As usual the halbaes went all out during the trip, trying their best to enjoy as much as they can. It's a bit disturbing to see them trying to find their way to the hotel in Spain and the production team just looked on without any help. You can see how stress and tired out they are when they realised they are lost in the maze alike streets. The funny side is when halbae Gu threw his temper when the production are looking on without any help.

The halbae who stood out in this show should be Teddy bear halbae. Though it was said there are complaints about him sitting out of some of the sights but you gotta love him for his cuteness. Like how he enjoyed himself while touring in a horse carriage while other halbaes went for a walking tour in some castle. Haha He even asked them whether they walked a lot after they came back. And oh, I enjoyed seeing him savouring all the good food in Spain and how he ate the popcorn while watching a soccer match. Haha Stuff a handful into his mouth each time.

I guess most of the older men will tour like him. Sitting by a cafe, enjoying a cuppa, taking in the sights and deem that they visited the place already. To them this the way to do on a tour, it's enjoying life. And most of the time, they don't even remember names of the places they are brought to. Just asked my Mr Love, he had no idea of most of the places we went to in Taiwan. Haha He is happy as long as he finds the place interesting enough.

There are more emphasis on the interaction between Na PD and Lee Seo Jin this time round. Seeing them trying to outsmart and make life difficult for each other is funny. Especially both have a achilles heels of their own- Maths for Na PD and cooking for Lee Seo Jin. And of course how the porter is doing such a great job handling the halbaes now is amazing. Can still recall the 1st season when he found out about the trick played on him. Haha

This show is especially closed to my heart. Having my own mum who love travelling and vow to travel and see the world as much as she can before she cannot do so. The halbaes were grateful for the chance though it took a toll on their health as seen in the footage. To hear them talk about this maybe being their last trip brings some sadness and the way they take all into their stride.

Hopefully the halbaes will be healthy enough to embark on another trip soon :)

Nostalgic

While many were following You from another star and going ga-ga over it (my mummy included as she just jumped on the bandwagon), I didn't managed to watched pass episode 3.

There was no particular reason but I just don't find it interesting enough to keep on watching. Funny as it is but it is just not appealing enough to me. Perhaps I will go back to it after I finished what I was watching.

I am currently following Emergency Man and Woman by TVN diligently. Initially due to running man only female cast - Song Ji Hyo acting in it but found the story to be attractive enough for me to follow through.

Then while channel surfing 1 day, I chanced upon another show by TVN- Answer me 1994. This story is based on 6 20 year old students from other provinces in South Korea pursuing their college education in Seoul and staying in a boarding house.

Watched the 1st few episodes only but it sure catches my attention. Though I don't really follow the cultures/ styles of  1994 South Korea but there are some similarities between South Korea and Singapore during middle to late 90s. Pagers, Sega games, cassette & video tapes, queuing up to use public payphones using coins/ phone cards, big ass monitors, DOS not windows. It sure stirs up the nostalgic feelings.

I love how the friendships are portrayed in this is show reminding me the close friends I made during my poly days. I like how the characters acted so naturally and is not typical South Korea melodrama where usually it is more focused on the lead actor and actress love line. Though there is also a love line in this series but the story line is about 1st love of the 20 year old which also reminds me of my love life during my 20s.

I don't know all of the actors/ actresses cast in this show, only can recognized the shorter girl who appeared in Running Man once and also Na PD(who had a cameo) because I watched Grandpa over flowers. Haha.

Most of all I like how it brings us back to the days where life are much simpler.

Suddenly I realized that TVN produces better shows than the other 3 broadcasters since I am watching their 2 TV Serials and 1 variety show -Grandpa over flowers in Spain. Hehe. But then again, it maybe me only.  

Rain is back

Long before Hallyu wave hit Singapore shores in 2005(or did it hit but I dunno? ) I heard this song over radio named " I do, I do" by Rain (The Korean singer). Decided that I liked his vocals well enough to go buy his CD because of this song.

Totally dunno what the song is about but it has a chirpy, romantic feel to it and for some reason I like the song a lot, even till now.

Then he fell of my radar after a while because there wasn't much emphasis put on Kpop at that time. Haha

While watching latest running man episode, I realized he had made a comeback.

With the help of YouTube and a Chinese mp3 website,  I chanced about his latest ballad- Marilyn Monroe. Love his husky vocals belting out ballads though I think he still excel in his dance hits (if you watched the videos).  Welcome back Rain, it's nice to hear your songs again after so many years, reminds me of the times when I played back your CD again and again years ago. Haha

On a side note, rain is also back in Singapore. The scenery around us changed from autumn to spring. Everything turns from yellow to green. Yeah. Spring is here :)

Korean Spicy chicken stew/Dak Doritang /닭도리팅

Saw this dish prepared in Running Man episode 184 and wanted to try coooking myself. Hehe I wanted to finish using up the Korean Gochujang I have in the fridge from making Budae Jjiage.

The recipes I saw online didn't really state how much water to add and don't seems to be soupy form the pictures but the version I saw on Running man was made like a soup dish. So I decided to tweak the version a bit and cooked a soupy version.

Don't know whether I am doing Korean cuisine an injustice or not by changing the recipe here and there to suit my taste buds. Hur Hur

Here's my version 

Ingredients:

500g of chicken cut into parts (brought off shelf from NUTC and cut into smaller pieces)
3 potato peeled and cut into big pieces
1 carrot peeled and cut into big pieces
5 cloves of garlic
5 thick slices of ginger
2 tbsp of Korean Gochujang
2 tbsp of Gochugaru
2 tbsp of rice wine
4 tbsp of light soy sauce
1tbsp of sesame oil

I initially tried to cook this in my slow cooker, but true to its name the whole soup doesn't boil even after 2 hours despite using hot water. Thus I transferred them to my trusty ceramic pot and cooked over stove for an hour. The chicken, potatoes and carrot were cooked nicely despite cooking for an hour only.

Cooking Method:

I mixed the gochujang, gochuharu, rice wine, soy sauce to create a paste and then mixed it well with the chicken, potaoes and carrots in a pot.

After which, I added in 1.5 litre of water/ After boiling, I lower the heat and allow it to simmer for 45min and sieve away the excess oil in between.

Just before serving, I turn the heat up again to allow it to boil and add in the sesame oil.


Verdict:

The end product is a bit oily in my opinion. Not sure whether its fromt he gochujang or the chicken but I did sieve off the excess oil while cooking.

But the soup tastes surprisingly good especially since I cooked with the chicken bones still attached. Was initially worried that the chicken and potatoes will not be well cooked since I only transferred to the stove and cooked for an hour only. But my worries were unfounded and the chicken was tender when served.

Mr Love did not like this dish though but he did drink quite a bit of the soup. But he will have to bear with me cooking Korean dishes till we get to go to Korea at the end of the year. Haha

Pushed back

Another bad news of the week, Mr Love had confirmed he is unable to apply leave in March. So we will have to push back our trip to Seoul. Hehe The good thing is, he is still agreeable to going to Seoul. Phew. Then again you never know till air tickets are confirmed.

I was disappointed since we always travel during my birthday and our ROM anniversary for the past few years. But work is work, there is nothing we can do. Moreover, Mr Love is sill under probation.

And so I cannot get the new CNBLUE CD that I was intending to buy there. Think they will launch on 2nd March and since I planned to be there on 12th March, am just in time to get 1 for partner and myself.

On a brighter note, it gives me more time to fine tune my planning. Not sure I am well prepared enough to make the trip. I was still gearing up to do more research and guess I should be able to do it at a more comfortable pace.

But but but I still wanna go on a trip on my birthday week. How?

It seems that researching for Korea trip is much tougher than I though. Breezing through the Taiwan researchs, I had underestimate this time round. Simply cannot find the directions by entering in English or Chinese!! While Google map was a god sent for Taiwan research, the same cannot be said for Korea.

Nearly smashed my PC while trying to find my way to 1 particular place. And so, I read that Naver Map was gives more accurate directions than Google. The only drawback is, it is all in Korean. Faints.

And so armed with Google translate, I proceed to translate every word on the app so that I can familiarise myself with the app. It took me a good half an hour to find the directions from A to B.

I am not sure whether the lyrics are true to the translation but then it's pretty difficult to translate totally from 1 language to another to reflect their original meanings isn't it? Randomness

An entry about my random thoughts these few days. Too random and thus I am not sure how to blog down separately.

>>If there is no 1 taking reserved seat in the train, can I take it till someone needy comes along? Or I should stand aside and let the others who need it more to sit? But what if someone else who doesn't need it comes along and sit down? With all these thoughts in my mind, I reached my station and got down without taking the seat.

>>Just realized I didn't buy any accessories for this New Year and for that matter didn't buy accessories since my 2013 Taiwan trip. Went and shop around and brought a necklace and a pair of earrings. Am super happy with my finds though they were a bit on the expensive side.

 >> Wondering whether I can handle god son on next Monday on my own for 30min (or so Bestie claims) when she is off for her appointment? Stress! The last time I handled him is before he flies off to Scotland but he was just a baby then! He had since grown so much and the only time he sees me is during our Skype sessions which Bestie says he smiles at whoever is on that, not because he can recognizes me. Faints!

>> When I get to go for my Korea trip, I am gonna find my way to Lapalatte shop and buy 1 of their super cute design bags. Whaha. While I am there, I will also go find the CD shop that my guide book recommends and buy a CNBLUE CD for Partner's next birthday (hopefully got a lot of free gifts) as I just realized during the other day's dinner that she also hearts this band! We are really partners! Haha

>> I haven been having dinner with Mr Love for the past 4months and I missed the nightly dinner terribly.

>> Am still thinking of which dress to wear for the 1st 2 days of CNY and cannot decide. Haha

>>I missed the Calla Lilies in Taiwan. Wonder should I make a trip there alone if Mr Love cannot squeeze out time in March. I can then meet up with mummy & piggy bro when they stop over on their way back from US. But I am a bit afraid of going on a trip on my own. Hehe Scary cat.

>> Did all the extra walking these few months (cause the hubs dun drive to work anymore) help me to lose some weight? Mr Love say walking 20mins a day WILL NOT help in losing weight. Thank you for your "encouragement" Love.

>>Am secretly pleased with the good bargain I pick up in Esprit the other day. 1 shorts and sunglasses for 80bucks due to having discount of 48bucks with 128bucks spent. The total bill is still lesser than the cost of the sunglasses itself (89 bucks after discount). Always happy to find good bargains. Cheap thrill. Hehe

>> Should I cut my hair short or leave it long and perm it? But I am fed up with drying my hair before sleep every night.
