Road signs pointing to various attractions. |
1 thing bout Shifen is, their road signs are abit on the ambiguous side, they are all pointing to a general direction of the waterfall but the signs can suddenly get lost/missing for a stretch of road, making you wonder whether you are walking in the right direction or not.
The worst thing is, there are a stretch of road where no residential activities are in sight, and the only thing we can do is to keep walking. No point turning back since we are already here. Under this unforgiving weather, it can be quite a chore.

Hubs, captivated by some dog on the track |
We came across a monument of Shifen, with a sky lantern (天灯) on top of it and a clock and temperature reading. It shows 26 degrees here, but it sure felt like 30degrees here with the sun shining oh so brightly.

Monument of Shifen |
Shifen is a pretty sleepy town it seems not much of a activity as we walked down the streets, residents sitting outside their house chatting to past time and people we meet are mostly elderly, occasionally we see young toddlers. My guess is the working population had already moved to the bigger cities.

Farmer hard at work |
Walked past Shifen elementary school and stood outside to peep, there are classes going on but from the voices within, I reckon that students are only a handful only. There are no high school insight as we walked on. Perhaps, there isnt any to start with, perhaps its just not at this part of the town that we are walking.

Shifen Elementary school |
In any case, I like the serenity of this little town :)
We came to a point where there are no roads insight at the end of the residential areas. Seeing no accessible road in front of us, the only sensible thing to do is to cross the road to the other side where there a long road ahead. Not sure whether we are taking the correct path or not but in any case, there seems to be no other choice at this moment. All road signs pointed to this direction, we cannot be walking back to the train station right? So, we pushed on.

Start of the long march |
Hubs actually walked under the scotching hot sun for some time but gave in a while later and took out his umbrella to shed from the sun. We were unable to walk side by side along the road as cars will drive pass at times.

Hubs finally took out his umbrella |

Down slope |
After 10mins of walking (seems like forever) along the main road, we saw the signs again. Yay. It's a down slope and we happily walk along it, thinking that the falls will be nearby..

Posing in front of the sign happily |
How wrong can we get..As we walked along, there seems to be no other person nearby and the fall is no where in sight. Walked past an abandoned building which seems to see better days in the past.
5min later, we came face to face with what I dreaded most- Suspension bridge.

Such a long stretch...Oh...my...god... |
I was still telling hubs earlier on in train that no way I will walk past this kind of bridge and here I am standing infront of it facing it, in a dilemma where to cross or not.
There seems no other way here and should I give up and turn back, it would be such a waste since we had walked 20mins under the sun in. To cross, I am having butterfiles in my stomach. Finally, I took 1 deep breath and walked on. Told hubs not to make any big motions to shake the bridge and told him to stay close to me as I am really very AFRAID!

Hubs, looking all ease while on the suspension bridge |
Walked across the bridge as fast as I can and then there seems to be no more walking path. We realised now we have to walked along the train tracks. Quite exciting though. There are a family of 4 in front of us taking photos and posing on the track.
No wonder when the train reached this area earlier on, it slowed down. This is to ensure people walking along the track would have sufficient time to react when they see the train approaching.
|
I'm in the middle of the track! |
We walked more slowly along the track as there are tree shades along the way and we can take time to camwhore. Entrance to the fall is 5min away only. Should be able to see on the train while on the way to Shifen, but being the 1st time here, we did not know when we 1st came in.
