台湾春天之旅 2013- Luna Sea Mall, Yilan Dong Men Night Market (宜兰东门观光夜市)

We left Yilan winery shortly before 5pm and proceed to walk back the way we came from. Wanted to go the mall we saw earlier to check out their SK II prices. Hehe.

Was approach by some promotion people, asking us to join them in an event on sat at this mall. Man, I look local! whahah I politely declined and told them I am from overseas. Went into the mall and check out the SKII prices, man its wayyyy more expensive than SG. Dropped the idea to buy from here. hehe..

We passed by a HTC shop and hubs went in to check out their phones. I was drawn to the next door Samsung shop having seen the baby pink Note 2... OMGGGGGG..Note 2 in pink..I WANT!!! The retail price is NT22,000 which is near to SGD 1K..Man, why didn't Samsung come out with this shade when I was buying my Note 2? Damn.

Baby Pink Note 2, I want!

We then exit the mall and saw a pet shop by the side. Hubs was so happy and we decided to go check it out. They have cats, dogs and fishes here and hubs was very impressed by the cleanliness of the fish tanks..

Price of the dogs and cats here are a fraction of what it cost in Singapore. No wonder I see every other Taiwanese carrying a dog while on the street. Frankly, many a times I was startle by their dogs. On sale there was some hamster's cage and hubs decided to buy 1 home for the 2 hammie that he is gonna get from my colleague.

Yes, you didn't see wrongly, we brought a cage all the way from Taiwan for our hammies. Its costs NTD 680 and we told the sales gal to dismantle it for easy packing. Her reaction was epic when she learnt where we are from. Must be thinking, Singapore didn't see hammie's cage ar? whahah.. I did prepare for this already, leaving a space in the small luggage for the cage when I packed for the trip. whahah..Know my hubs well.

Playful Shiz-tzu
The skies are turning dark as we made our way back to our starting point at Yilan train station. And streets are getting more crowded now with workers and students going home.
A more busy Yilan Train station
We then walked towards the direction of Yilan Dongmen Night Market (宜兰东门观光夜市). When you exit Yilan train station, turn left and cross the road. Walk along the row of shops and you will come face to face with a flyover. The night market is situated under the flyover.

While walking,we came across a van selling 葱油饼(onion pancakes) and decided to buy 1 to try it out. Hubs was beri hungry by then. We choose the 1 with egg and its costs NTD 30. The plain 1 costs NTD25.
礁溪葱油饼
What makes this stand out above the rest of 葱油饼sold all over Taiwan is that it is 现做现买 meaning to say, when you order the lady boss will start prepare the pancakes. She used a glass bottle to roll out the dough and then throw into the deep fryer to fry the dough, then when it is nearly well fried, an egg will be cracked and added(if you ordered the 1 with egg). Lastly, they scope in a generous amount of spring onion to the pancakes.

Lastly, the lady boss will then apply the various sauces according to your liking to the pancake. And then, its done! Ta-dah, a piping hot but very fragrant pancake is served.

Adding the sauces
We took a bite and immediately fell in love with the taste. Hubs decided to order 1 more as we stood there eating the pancake. Haha. Had a little conversation with the vendors as there was no 1 else, they told us the original stall was in Jiao Xi and they still have 1 stall there now managed by the lady boss' dad. No wonder, I read somewhere in my research that JiaoXi have a famous Onion pancake stall, but we didnt see it while walking around.

For some 1 like me who loathes veggies, spring onion sits on top of the list. But the taste of this spring onion pancake is so fragrant that you forgot that they are spring onions. Realli. Perhaps the Lanyang plains' spring onion are famous for this reason. We saw alot of fields growing spring onions during our 2 days in Yilan.
The oh so hungry hubs waiting patiently for the pancake
They were curious about Singapore when we told them where we were from. Asking us about the "Fine city" name and also our strict laws of caning. Haiz, Singapore is only famous for this.

We proceed to walk to the night market after finishing our pancakes outside a supermart. Its just 5min away from this stall. We are oredi half full from the pancakes and thus decided to check out what this night market has to offer before deciding what to eat next.

Yilan Dongmen Night Market
The night market is pretty empty at 5.45pm except for a handful of scooters weaving in and out of the narrow streets. Keep having to make way for them as we checked out the stalls. Its kinda of irritating, I wished they would keep the scooters away, at least during peak hrs.

Still empty

This is a pretty small night market if you compared to the others in Taiwan. A street full of vendors, then a small area selling accessories and having some games then a small area of dine in guests. We went round the whole market in 20min.

Decided to order finger food instead and settled for a stall named "辣妈的店" when can be loosely translated as "Hot mama's shop". We decided to order a chicken cutlet to share. While standing there, I noticed that there is a special dish called "Bu rou" (卜肉). And out of curiousity, I asked her what is so special about this dish.

She mentioned that this is onli found in Yilan and it is a kind of meat that comes from certain part of a pig, not sure why the other cities are no offering this. But its pretty true, we have neber seen this in the Taipei night markets or maybe we missed it. Hehe. We ordered a serving to share too.

The selection
We tried the 卜肉 and found it to be very tender. Taste is like normal pork cutlet, but then its tenderness is what attracts us. Love it! Not to be missed if you are here.

宜兰卜肉
冰糖葫芦
We came across a stall selling roasted corn and decided to get 1 as its 1 of my favourite street food in Taiwan. Turns out to be a mistake. I am not sure whether the lady boss had overcharged us as there were no price stated. She merely weighted the corn and charged us NTD60 for it. I got it for NTD25 when in Taipei!

The worst is the taste, not fragrant and on top of everything, the sauce she used is dunno wat sweet sauce, making the corn taste awful. Was so awful that I managed to eat half of it only.

Awful tasting corn
We decided to call it a day after buying the corn as were full oredi, plus we still have the snacks we brought from the supermart in the day. Walked back to Yilan station where we caught a train to JiaoXi.

Boss hotel
We took a local train (区间车)from Yilan back to JiaoXi (2stops) and it costs NTD15.
Train tix from Yilan to Jiaoxi.

Walked abit in the night market of Jiao Xi. It is not realli a night market, just some stalls opening for business at night. Were realli too full and we didnt manage to buy anything here.
