台湾春天之旅 2013-Luo Dong Night Market (罗东夜市)

We took the bus from Luo Dong sports park and alight at Luo Dong park to get back to our hotel.  Told the driver our intented destination and he reminded us to get off at the stop.

Checked in to our room to rest and wash up before going down to Luo Dong Night market is which a stone throw away from our hotel. We had heard from the locals in Yilan that this night market is more happening than Yilan Dong Men Night Market.

We alighted at this stop-Gong Zheng Elementary school
We saw the entrance to the night market from the bus stop and as we still have the box of paper meat with us, we decided to go check in 1st before checking out this night market. Hotel is just around the corner.

From Night market to Kapok hotel

Still early!

We are here
Mr Love decided that we should eat something at the 小炒店 as we are very hungry from the cycling earlier on. 小炒店 is like our 煮炒 but with lesser selection as compared to SG. Also, the portions are smaller as compared to ours, price is lower also..

Menu

Menu part 2
We decided to share a bowl of clams porridge and a plate of oyster omelett.. The calms in the porridge are very fresh, giving the porridge a sweet taste. And they added quite a lot of ginger to the porridge too. Am not sure on what veggie they use, but it tastes surprisingly sweet. I am not a big fan of veggies but these really tastes good and on top of it, its cooked till very soft, melting in your mouth along the the porridge. Dun like those veggie where a lot of chewing needs to be done.

Our clams porridge
Taiwanese version of oyster omelett is 1 that I dun fancy all the while. Reason being, they pour the gravy all over the omelett, making it soggy in the process. I like mine dry and crispy.

Very soggy oyster omelett
The total bill came up to less than NTD50 and we are already half full. Decided to go check out the other food this night market has to offer.

We walked up n down the street but didn't see anything that caught our attention. Contrary to what the locals told us about this night market, I didn't find it especially nicer than the Yilan 1. Perhaps what they meant are on the whole, not only food but also the apparels selection.

But the both of us just skipped the apparels section altogether. Reason being, the clothes they are selling are still the winter 1s. And Taiwanese gals are so small in size, making me look like an elephant next to them. How to buy their clothes? I dun find them especially cheap too and their designs dun appeal to me as its more towards the kawaii Japanese and Korean style. I think I totally cannot carry off that LOOK.

In the end, we decided to buy 卜肉again. Whahah love the taste ever since we tried it in Yilan. We came across this particular stall and decided to order from it. The mistake we made is, they didn't have any pricing listed on it. And when the stall owner told us the price, I nearly fainted.

A serving here costs NTD 100!!! Its like twice the normal price lo!!! Not sure whether he anyhow charged the price knowing that we are not locals. The worst thing is, it doesn't tastes as nice as the 1 we had in Yilan and the portion is not big either to justify the NTD 100 we paid! Angry !

Looks can be deceiving
I shot the owner a dirty look as I stood in front of his stall tasting the meat. Haha, deliberately took a photo of the stall to warn others of this 黑店.

Expensive and awful 卜肉
Then suddenly, out of no where, it started to pour heavily. Faints! How to 逛夜市 when it is raining heavily? Spoils our day leh. We walked around awhile with the umbrellas but decided to call it a day as its difficult to get thru the crowd with umbrellas and there is no way we can eat n walk under the rain.
Raining!
We went back to our hotel and snack on the snacks we brought previously in Jiaoxi. And also the paper meat that the kind 阿姨 gave us today. Watched discovery channel while snacking away. I took the opportunity to call mummy to update her bout our trip.

We noticed that the rain stopped at 8pm and decided to go down the night market again. Mr Love didn't get to eat his fill just now you see. And since the rain had stopped, we didn't even bother to bring our umbrella, just brought along the important documents and down we go. Hur hur lucky for us, it didn't start raining while we were there.

Walked around the night market again to see what to get for this round. Came across a stall tat sells BBQ chicken parts. Wings, thighs, buttocks, neck etc.. Hubs ordered 4 wings and the stall owner heated it up for us, total cost, NTD90 only.

It certainty feels good to be eating something piping hot under this cold weather. As the rain has just stopped, the temperature is a little on the cold side, I reckon maybe at 16degrees? And the 2 brave souls here are in our shorts and t shirts only. Jackets are in our room, so as the wind blows, we shiver. Haha.

BBQ Chicken parts
We came across 葱油饼 again and hubs brought 1 to share. This is more like prata in our opinion. The spring onion has been added during kneading and it lost its fragrance as the prata was reheated again when we ordered it. Meaning to say, they had cooked the prata before hand already and re-heat upon order. Unlike the 1 we had in Jiaoxi, its cook from scratch once u order.

Prata alike 葱油饼

Seems like quite a famous stall
With this prata, we are nearly at our brim already. But Mr Love's eyes suddenly brighten up when he saw the fried chicken cutlet stall.

The cutlet they sells here boasts to be a 12oz mega size and the cuttlefish cutlet is also equally big! We decided to order 1 chicken cutlet and then an assortment of the other finger food.

You get to choose 3 kinds of finger food for NTD 100 and they will throw in some crackers and fried veggies to go along. Quite worth it, I would say. In the end, I choose 卜肉, fried soft shell crab and fried squid. It came in a big cup with chilli powder sprinkled all over.

Total bill is NTD160.

This time, we decided to really call it a day after this purchase and proceed back to our hotel to enjoy the food. Before going back, we stopped by the convenience stall to pick up some tea, hoping to wash away the oil in the food. I commented to Mr Love, these finger food would go better with Taiwan beer and he said I am an alcoholic! wahah..Its just a comment ma...

This marks an end to our JiaoXi - Yilan - Luo Dong 2 days trip. I must say, there are a lot of places that we have yet to cover, like Su-ao, turtle Island and the Yongle train station that I wanted to take a photo with.

The north eastern part of Taiwan had left us a good impression especially food wise.Maybe the next trip to Taiwan, I would try to arrange more days here to explore. Till the next time we meet, we will be back :)
