Last day of 2013

In a blink of eyes,  we reached the last day of 2013.

It has generally been a good year for me except recent months.

Though I set out this year to try conceive again after losing XB, I failed and got further away from my aim instead.

But I try to not to despair and decided to leave things in god's hand.

Mummy had always taught us that what is mine will eventually be mine. What is not mine will never be mine. So I shall wait patiently for the chance to come and it doesn't come,  then we make a pact to check ourselves into an old age home and in our later years. Haha.

Still, I am thankful for what I have, healthly parents, loving hubby, stable (or so I hoped) job and peaceful life. I am contended if things remain this way.

Looking forward to a better 2014.

I wish I was a caterpillar

My new shoes finally reached on Xmas eve and man I was so happie to haf new shoes start the new year. Hehe

Anyways, I did not wait for New Year to start wearing the shoes, intead wore it on Xmas & Boxing day. * Bleah*

After the closure of No Concept shoes in Taiwan, I couldn't find any lasting comfortable flats. I tried getting some from Pretty fit but since it is make of cloth, it wears out pretty fast. The worse is that the design is discontinued and I am not able to get any more. I think I brought 5 pairs over a few months and since had outworn all.

Ok, to be fair No Concept is still retailing in Singapore. But the price is really rocket high and had been climbing too steadily ever since I start to buy in 2009.

Cloth flats from Pretty fit
My fav No Concept shoes from Taiwan

Then came along Melissa shoes which I stumbled across while FB surfing 1 fine day. It is also known as jelly shoes and is made of plastic(I think). Which makes it a good material for Decemeber in Singapore where it rain every other day.

This is a brand from Brazil and it is only available in Tangs, Robinson and another sole distributor in Wheelock place. Not sure whether it is due to import taxes or what, but the retail price here is also damn crazy.

Suddenly a "gift" dropped from nowhere when I realised some one is selling via FB at a much cheaper price. Not really dirt cheap but it is definitely more reasonable than the prices in the departmental stores. And since they are buying from overseas website( I guessed) they bring in more designs (yay).

So the Ah Soh me went to Tangs to try out my shoe size 1st and 1 fine day in November, the seller suddenly announced that there is a year end sale for shoes size 8 & above. Hahah It is fated I should purchase from them after comtemplating for 1 month since my shoe size is the humongous US9.

The shoes are priced at around SGD 80-90 for flats which is around lower than No Concept shoes but the advantage is it is waterproof which is pretty essential now. So I took the plunged and brought 2 pairs at 1 go.

The ETA was in mid Dec but was delayed till near Xmas. Waited anxiously for the shoes to arrive since all other flats I had are threatening to give way anytime soon should I walked in the rain again. Damn the ponding. Imagine my joy when I received the flats and couldn't wait to try them on.

The shoes are all coated with a bubblegum smell which makes it sweet smelling (not that I will smell my shoes). But I am not sure how long can the smell last. But the shoes are really comfortable. Really. Since it is make of some special plastic and waterproof, I can wash it if I happen to walk in water puddles. On top of it, they are very light weighted and doesn't gives me blisters like some other brand I know (C&K).

I was so happy with my purchases that I went online to source for direct purchase from the overseas website and came across a UK Shoe retailer having sales and they charges a minimal for shipping or free if you managed to hit a certain amount.

So, I enlisted Bestie's help to get the shoes delivered to her house and she will help bring back to me when she comes back for CNY. Double yay for me. But quite paiseh cause need trouble her.

Wanted to buy their heels too since the prices are cheaper even in pounds but decided not to as it would be too heavy for bestie and hubs keep saying the heels are too tall and insist I stick to flats. So I went crazy and got 3 pairs which is not even SGD 200 including shipping charges from the seller.

Now, I wished I am a caterpillar than can parade the shoes once and for all when I get them in CNY. Haha but too bad I am not. So it's 1 at a time I guess.

A big thank you to bestie who agreed to help me bring back the shoes. Hope it doesn't cause you too much trouble. Looking forward to see you, my god son and my shoes in Feb'14. Haha

Sisterhood

Had our sisters' Xams gathering the other day and had a blast with my sistas. Xmas gathering is not an annual affair for us but I guess we will try to make it annually. But it is never easy to fit in everyone's schedules.

As usual we met in Ion as the other 3 make it their personal mission to familiarise me with the shopping centre that they deem no Singaporean should be a stranger to. Truth to be told, if not for having to meet them there I would not have step foot in the shopping centre. I mean there is nothing there for me to buy. Either that or I can easily get the stuff in any shopping centres in the West area.

And I totally hate the crowd. Period. The other 3 find it funny that I lost my way during our 1st meeting there 2 years ago. It's my 1st time there and I simply had no idea where the restaurant that we are meeting is. End up calling them for help and stood there till they found me. Haha Epic.

This time round it got better. I was the 1st to reach and tried to act smart by volunteering to go queue up. Not much of an issue except that it took me 3 rounds around the level before locating the restaurant. Sweet. Still, the next sister came in 20min after me. Heheh

Group shot
We talked/updated/gossiped/bitched throughout dinner while waiting for Dear Dear to arrive. It is always good to catch up with them once in a few months.

In front of them, I can relax and tell them my worries while listening to theirs. In front of them, I am not afraid of doing silly things, luffing at our internal jokes, in short let my guard down. Ahhhh, the beauty of having close knit friends, you get to release the frustrations you built up within the months.

Since we might not chat as often as I did with bestie on whatsapp, we got tons of things to update each other. Every 1 was trying to input as much as we can during dinner. Haha.

Yiyi and partner with their gifts
And then we did a mini gifts exchange towards the end of dinner. As usual, we luff ourselves silly during the exchange. Not sure why but everytime during gifts exchange be it during Xmas or birthdays there bound to be a joke among the gifts.

This year the joke is on partner's gift to us. Her gift is of odd shape but she tried to wrap them like a rectangular 1 and stacked them in her cupboard. So, the bottom 1 has 2 dents in it while the top 1 seems more decent looking.

See the dimples on our gift

And I got the bottom box while Yiyi got the top box. I kept poking at the dent and comment that my gift got dimples and Yiyi got a better 1 at the expense of my gift since hers is on top of mine. Partner was paiseh at the dents in mine and Dear Dear's gift and we teased her endlessly.

Dear and me with our gifts

And so the fun continued for 10min till we found another target to tease. We realised Dear had used Partner's gift as a head rest while opening up my pressie to her. Haha Got caught in the act and we took picutres of it another 5 min of luffing went on.

Resting her head on Partner's gift

Anxious to see whether she liked my pressie or not

And so the gifts exchange ended on a cheerful note and we decided to call it a day. Went out to find some corner to take photos before we left. We usually will take quite a few for memories sake. Hopefully 30years later, we will be able to look back at the many photos we took and remember the good times we had since 18/19 years old.

In case if you are wondering why my hand is on Partner's face is because she kept complaining her face is too big on my Note 2 screen and I tried to cover part of it for her. Haha. She made me stood in front of the pics but I proved to be too tall to be right in front. Hur Hur.

Merry Christmas my sisters, it had been a fun night as usual. May we all be blessed with abundance of good health, love, happiness, wealth. See ya in 2014 where we will celebrate 10yrs of graduation and of course our next milestone in life, the big 3 birthdays. *Muackz*

Xams 2013

Xmas came and went in  a blink of eyes. It was not a good year end for me but nevertheless I think I had bounced back from the setbacks and start to look forward to 2014 with a open mind and positive mindset.

Coming from a traditional Chinese family, we do not have Xmas celebrations. But this year, with the newly renovated (not really that new la) and little bro gotten married already I decided to have a mini gathering in our house.

Since we do not have an oven at home to heat up the turkey, I sourced for a ready cooked 1 and only need to heat up the sauces. Hehe.
Turkey from Swensens
I ordered the turkey from Swensen's and went to collect on the eve. I think their turkey was prepared quite well. The meat was more tendered than I imagined but then again I am not a frequent eater of turkey. The turkey was so humogous that the 5 of us (3 silblings and our spouses) only managed to finish half of it along with the pizzas.

Super big turkey
We end up ta baoing the other half for dad who couldn't make it due to work. Mummy was even best, I had to get her a pack of fried rice since she doesn't eat what she claimed to be western food. Haha. So while we sat there eating, she gobbled up her fried rice and all the while giving us stares that as though as we are eating weird food.

Mummy's fired rice

My fav Hawaiian pizza

BBQ Chicken pizza
We were too full from dinner to start the board game and gave the idea up. End up, everyone just hung around watching Jackie Chan's movie shown on Channel 5. It was a cosy gathering as I had not seen my darling brother for 2months. That chap, dun even missed me!!Aggrrr..

Merry Christmas everyone. Here's to good health and a better 2014 *Cheers*

Korean Glass noodles/ Japchae/ 잡채

Was at Korean Supermart the other day and came across this pack of sweet potato glass noodle. Heh heh, decided to buy 1 packet back and try making Japchae (잡채). This is pretty similar to our chinese tang hoon (冬粉) but more springy.

Again I modify the receipe a bit to suit to my liking and of course what is available in my kitchen.

Ingredients:

Half a carrot, thinly sliced
Quater of a cucumber, thinly sliced
50g of beef (Thinly sliced and marinated with tablespoon of sesame oil and pepper)
3 Japanese mushrooms, thinly sliced
1 black fungus, thinly sliced
2 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tablespoon of dark soy sauce
100g of Korean glass noodles
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 tablespoon of sesame oil
1 egg, fried and cut into slices

Sliced marinated beef
Took me quite a while to slice them

Supposed to add chinese spinach but the markets/ super markets sell by a big bunch, since I have no other use of it, I decided not to add it in.

Cooking Method:

1). Bring a pot of water to boil, cook the the glass noodles for about 7mins. Drain the water and rinse the noodles under running water.
Water drained

2). Heat up the frying pan and stir fry the garlic till light brown

3). Add in the carrots, cucumber, Japanese mushroo, black fungus and lastly the beef.

4). Stir fry for 2 mins, add in a tablespoon of dark soy sauce.

5). Dish out

6). In the frying pan, stir fry the noodle with 1 tablespoon of dark soy sauce and 1 table spoon of sesame oil.

7). Add in the beef/veggies/egg mixture and stir fry for 2 min to mix well and it is ready to be serve.

Verdict:

The receipe I referred to had advised to cook the ingredients separately 1 by 1. It is said to be the correct way of preparing Japchae and at the end, you just mixed everything together in a big bowl.
Japchae/잡채

It proves to be too time consuming for me as I spent quite a big deal of time cutting up the ingredients.

Thus, I chose the easy way out by stir frying everything together at 1 go and add in the glass noodles finally so as to serve the dish hot.

Seriously, I didn't find anything wrong with my cooking method and the noodles taste as springy though it was boiled and then stir fried. Not sure what would be the results if I strictly followed the cooking instructions.

Also I should add toaste white sesame to this dish and again because I don't forsee much use of it, I did not buy. Hehe.

It's a simple dish to prepare and I liked it pretty well. It is also quite a healthy dish if I didn't add in the beef. As we ate it as a side dish, there are some leftover and I heat it up for dinner the next day. It can be a dish that is cooked to be stored in the fridge for next day lunch or dinner.

I shall attempt another round when I have the time. Perhaps should really try to cook everything separately and then mixing them together.

Self Healing

Dog eat dog

In this dog eat dog world, I suddenly feel so helpless.

When will all these be over?

Grandpa over flowers/ 花样爷爷/꽃보다 할배

It's official,  I am hallyu (Korean wave) fan now. Not only towards their music and tv serials. Even their variety shows are much more interesting.

I used to love (am still loving) Taiwanese variety shows for their wackiness.  Hosts who dun mince their words, ridiculous games and the travelogues are those that appeals to me.

But the Koreans bring it up to another level. 1st with running man where I am still diligently trying to watch every episode.  Then to the various talk shows I found on YouTube featuring the stars who I Google after watching running man.  Then to the music show on One channel which is slot in between shows to showcase many unknown singers. It wider my horizons on the Korean entertainment industry.

I read in I weekly the other day on this travelogue named Grandpa over flowers or 꽃보다 할배 or 花样爷爷。 The name is similar to the Korean F4 tv serial. The show seems to be interesting according to the write up.

Featuring 4 할아버지 (grandpas) namely Lee Soon Jae, Shin Gu, Park Geun Hyung and Baek II Sub with an average age of 76, it records their adventures as backpackers in Europe and Taiwan.  With them, is a younger actor (Lee Seo Jin) who doubled up as tour guide/ translator/ driver / bell boy/ financial controller/ nanny. I recognized 2 of the older grandpas from the tv serials but not the other 2. The younger actor is also unknown to me. Later then I realized he is the lead actor of "Lovers" where I watched many years back.

4 grandpas and their "servant"

It was hilarious at 1st to see the grandpas travelling through Europe and of course showcase the well known stubbornness of Korean Alpha male and the deep teachings of Confucius (孔子).

But as the show goes on, I cannot help but felt touched by the good spirits of the 할아버지. Overcoming their initial uneasiness of backpacking in a foreign country,  they seems to enjoyed the trip as the show proceed. You also get to see them keeping a lookout for 1 another and also the endless teasing. Its a different kind of travelogue.

During interviews,  they keep mentioning that this might be their last chance of seeing these places with the oldest of them all being 80 yrs old. They sought to get the best out of any difficult situations they faced. You have to give them credit for the efforts they put in.

The other worth mentioning is the younger actor ( though not that young at 43 but still the youngest). He was initially tricked into this show by misleading him that he will be going on the trip with 2 female pop stars. Imagine his shock when he realised he will be travelling with 4 grandpas. Epic.

Nonetheless, he did a good job in his roles. While people will usually had the luxury to plan prior to their trip, he can only plan along the way while taking into consideration of the grandpas' requests and comfort while trying to work within the budget. Not an easy feat I must say.

I will be keeping a lookout for their part 2 trip next year and meanwhile ponder whether I should watch the female version of this series.

대박 (Dae Bak)

Learnt this word while watching Running Man and recently "The Inheritors". Usually the Chinese translation would be "大发" which has no meaning to us. Its seems like an expression to me only and so I google and found that it means "Cool" or similar.

While going through my visitors' statistics, I realized there is a Google translation page in Korean. Out of curiosity, I clicked the page.

The expression 대박  can really be used on what I saw. Really 대박 !

That particular post I did got translated into Korean. Every single word except for the Chinese words. I guess whoever visited the page selected English to Korean translation and being the rojak Singaporean, my posts usually are mixed with some Chinese words.

Now then I know Google had such a powerful tool, the next time I should try to search for a Korean blog and translate it into English or Chinese to read.

Header
Contents originally in English got translated to Korean
My sidebar got translated too

Cool isn't it? To the Korean reader who translated my blog entry and read. Thank you for your interest, I am flattered and thank you for letting me know there is such a function from Google. Thank god for my itchy hands and curiosity. 대박 !

All gone

It's always a scary thought to me that one day you wake up happily to go work and by the end of the day, you found yourself out of work.

There might be numerous reasons to it but it's nonetheless scary.

I witnessed 3 such cases in a spam of 2 weeks.  Not a good feeling I must confessed no matter whether I am close to the affected or what they did wrong.

You see some gloating, you see some crying, you see shock shelled faces, you hear hushed gossiping. But nothing beats the feeling of the affected.

I tried to put myself in their shoes and shudder to think of the feeling,  it totally sucks. But while they are preparing to leave, most of us are busy worrying over our own plight and uncertainty over year end bonus. It over shadowed everything.

This is human nature I guess, putting your self above all. Still, it's a cold hard world especially in Singapore.

To those I never got a chance to bid farewell to you, I wished you all the best in your future endeavours.  I sincerely hope you are good somewhere else and please wished my well being back for I dunno whether I would be caught in such situation or not.

It's bad news after bad news recently and I hoped it will get better soon.

台湾春天之旅 2013-Crash course to taking trains in Taiwan

A few of my friends asked me about taking trains in Taiwan after my trips. Seems difficult to some trying to figure out the steps. But if you really try to understand enough, it is not that difficult after all.

That being said, we don't really have a railway system in Singapore, unless you count KTM which most of us don't even take.

So before I forget my experiences, let me document down what I have learnt from my previous trips.

Prior to my trips, I will always refer to Taiwan Railways Adminstration (TRA) website to check out timings of the train. This is pretty essential if you are travelling longer distance like to Taichung or South Taiwan.

Also, it is useful to plan you trip if you interested to travel to Pingxi or Jiji Line where train frequencies are not that high.

http://twtraffic.tra.gov.tw/twrail/English/e_index.aspx#

Of course, this is presuming if you know the English name of the station and the subline or area you are travelling to.

Subline/station selections

Using "Quick Search"  you select the Area/Subline you are taking, then followed by the station.
I always google the station name if I am not too sure which area/subline the station falls under.

For instance when travelling to Ershui which is the transfer station for Jiji Line, I mistakenly thought it is under Taichung Line(台中) but in fact it falls under Changhua Line(章化)and I didn't know Changhua has its own line. All along I thought it is part of Taichung.

Select the area & station name
Trains type/ date selection

I usually will select All types of train since express trains don't stop at smaller stations and their frequencies are not that high. Local train though have higher frequencies and cheaper travelling prices but it has 1 of the longest travelling time too as it will stop at every station along the way. Also, you are not guarantee a seat in local train. So it pretty much depends on your requirements.

Since I planned way before the trip, the selection of my desired date might not be available. I think the latest you can see is 2months from the day you are checking. Usually I will select the day that is similar to my travelling day. i.e if I plan to take this particular route on a Tuesday, I would select a Tuesday to check out the schedules.

Not that the difference would be big but some routes have extra trips on weekends so if you travelling on a weekday, there might be no such timing.

Hit "Search" after you selected all the require fields

Search results
Search results

A list of timing of trains will be reflected in the results screen. Here, estimated time of departure/ arrival will be shown. Fares and estimated travelling time will also be indicated.

If you click on the train code, it will also show the list of stations that the train passes through. It is not very essential but I usually will print it out so that I know if I am nearing my destination during travel.
List of stations
With these, it makes things much easier while planning my trip and also the cost of travel.

Of course the timings here are indicative. You will only get to know whether there is any delay during the actual travelling day.

Purchasing of tickets

I did not figure out how to buy tickets from the machines and thus I always queued up at the counter to purchase the tickets. All you have to do is to tell the sales your destination and time of train you wanna take and no. of tickets.

If you really must take any particular timing, it is best if you booked or purchase before hand as tickets might be sold out especially on weekends on the more popular routes. We didn't managed to get on the 9am train bound to Ruifang on a Saturday as it was sold out. End up taking a later train and missed the connecting Pingxi train. The day's schedules got pushed back quite a lot.

I did try to purchase advance tickets 1 day prior to my departure as I am afraid of it getting sold out. But the stress is that you have to stick strictly to the timing while preparing to leave the place.

Train schedules at stations

If you did not check the timings before hand, you can do so at the station too. For example in Taipei Main station, there is a huge board indicating the trains for the day and whether they would be on time or delayed.

But here, they would only show where the train is bound and not the list of stations the train will pass thru so unless you know which line to take, the information is pretty useless.

Alternatively you can check with the counter staff but it would jammed up the queue and also you will be hurried to make the decision once you are informed of the next train timing during long queues or peak hours.

I don't really like this kind of feeling and thus would check before hand.

Train schedules at Taipei Main station

Train schedules in Keelung station
Train scheules in Taichung station
But if you are at smaller stations travelling within the subline, you can just depend on the timings in the station as the frequency is pretty fast. It just depend on the fact on whether you want to pay more of a ticket on the express train or less for local train ticket. Difference would not be substantial unless you are on really tight budget.

When we are travelled between Jiaoxi (礁溪), Yilan (宜兰) & Luodong (罗东). We brought the tickets from sales counter by checking their printed schedules. If you are not travelling far from the subline, it is not very essential to check the timing beforehand even if you want to travel on impromptu to other parts in Yilan line. But you must also know which side to take as there are 2 routes, 1 travelling towards Taipei and the other towards Taitung.

I did however, print out a list of stations before and after Jiaoxi to understand the direction of train I will be taking. It is not too difficult as we can check with the counter staff. The stations here are smaller and thus there will only be 1 or 2 ticketing counters.

I am not sure whether the ticketing counter staff can speak English or not as I conversed in Mandarin with them.

Train schedules in Jiaoxi station
Similarly when we are at Ershui(二水) checking timing back to Taichung station(台中), we checked using their printed schedules. Reason being, we are a bit out of our initial planning and I didn't prepared other timings print out to check. The schedules are quite easy to understand for they did state the timing and stations the train will make a stop.

But here, it is totally in chinese so you must really be able read the words. If all else fails, ask. I am sure someone might be able to help though.

Train schedule in Ershui station
 Boarding the train

It is essential to know where to board your train in Taiwan train stations for there are usually 2 platforms. 1 serves the clockwise direction and the other the anticlockwise.

But for the case of Taipei station, there are 4 platforms, 3A, 3B, 4A & 4B, that is if my memory does not failed me. You will need to check which platform to go to upon entering the station since the train stops for a while only, you might not have enough time to rush to the correct platform. I usually will double confirm with the station master while entering the station.

As a rough guide, Platform 3A serves Western line South bound trains going to Banqiao, Hsinchu, Taichung, Kaohsiung, Pingtung.

Platform 3B serves Eastern Line Northbound train going to Banqiao, Shulin.

Platform 4A Western Line North bound trains going to Song Shan, Keelung

Platform 4B serves Eastern Line South bound train going to Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, Kaohsiung

For instance, if you are going to Jiaoxi which is on Yilan line, you should wait for your train at Platform 4B.

Even that, since the train frequency is high, you should check the train no. of the arriving train. Usually prior to the train arrival, the indicating board would display the arriving train information, stations it is passing through etc. They would also have English display but you must be alert enough not to miss.

The next arriving train might not be yours since there can be a delay or you might be too early.

Announcing arrival of the train
Kmowing which type of train you are taking also helps as you can differentiate by the train's outlook whether it is local train, Chu-Kuang Express, Tze-Chiang Express or Taroko Express. Usually Express trains will skip quite a lot of smaller stations and thus if you board it accidentally, you might end up somewhere far from your destination.

Local train

Chu Kuang express train
Taroko Express train

Tze Chiang Express on the right

All stations will indicate the general direction of the trains, so its a rough guide for you to know where to board the train.

Understanding the train tickets

Train tickets for Express trains like Chu-Kuang, Tze-Chiang and Taroko pretty much look the same.
It will state Train number, departure and arrival station, estimated departure and arrival time, carriage number, Seat number and price of tickets. Not difficult to understand in my opinion.

Tickets for Tze Chiang Express
An experience of us is once while travelling back to Taipei station, we board an Express train while holding a local train ticket. Being the 1st time there, we did not even know we board the wrong train.

All we did is asked whether the train is going back to Taipei and hoped on happily and found seats. And there is no train master to check our tickets, perhaps due to the short distance from Song Shan to Taipei.

But as we are exiting Taipei station, the station master informed us that we had board the wrong train, tickets are more expensive for Express train and thus we are "fined". I forgot the amount but since it's for 1 station only, it is not too expensive.
Tickets for Chu Kuang Express
After that, I make it a point to check whether it is the correct train we are boarding. For if you are travelling on long distance, you might not get a seat with the wrong tickets as seats are pre-assigned during purchase. You are also subjected to a fine if you board the train of higher amount that your tickets.

There are train masters checking your tickets on long distance trains. Usually they will start checking when the trains moves out of Taipei district.

Tickets for Taroko Express
Tickets for local train however, have no train and seat numbers stated. Its free seating on the carriages. You will have to surrender the tickets while exiting the station for some reason unknown to me.
Tickets for Local train
This is basically what I have gathered during my 3 trips to Taiwan. We used the railway more intensively during the most recent trip and is impressed by their system. Cheap and efficient it makes travelling through the cities a breeze. Hope it does help :)

Love Love Love

I saw an article shared Facebook saying that you should fall for someone who doesn't love you. It's states about how one can realized you can self heal when your love is unrequited and that you can go look for love again and will not be afraid of failure since you tried it before.

How true this article is.

Many had known that Mr Love and I being each other 1st boyfriend and girlfriend and got married after 7 years of dating. Its was rare in our generation in Singapore but not unheard of.

But not many knew that prior to us dating, both had our share of unrequited love. Whether it is us to others or others to us.

Like what the article had mentioned, I once carried a touch for someone during secondary school years for the longest time I remembered. When he got together with another girl, I was devastated. The agony, obsession of the unrequited love consumed me.

My mind is full of his images, every smile, every action, every thing about him. The most unbearable time is right before bedtime. Many days, I fell asleep thinking of him.

Worst is, we were good friends. He would confided in me about his relationship problems or talk long hours on the phone about everything under the sun. He even cried in front of me when he broke up with his 1st girlfriend. How not to be melted? All the while, we remained as good friends till his girlfriend got very jealous and we drifted away.

You know what people say about the greatest pain is loving someone right beside you but without his/her knowledge? It totally applied to me then though I am not sure whether it is love as I was very young back then. But I am pretty sure I am attracted to him.

I was angry at myself for not having the courage to express my feelings to him. I never get to know what will happen if I let him knew. I don't know whether it is due to the taboo of girls making the 1st move or it is my mum's threat of not allowing a boyfriend before I graduate from secondary school scares me more. In any case, I kept it buried deep in my heart.

I read somewhere that if you wake up 1 day and suddenly though of this person, it means you had put down him/her already. It is pretty true, at least for me. It took me quite long to realise that I had let go of this unrequited love. 1 fine day when I woke up and got ready for work after my O levels. I knew I had self healed already. But what I didn't know that this is going to makes me braver when it comes to love.

Then Mr Love came along, not out of no where though but we got closer over the years we know each other. I can sense his interest in me but also know his character of not knowing how to express his feelings.

To say we have no feelings for each other would be a lie. We are waiting for a chance or for each other to see who makes the move to make it more obvious. After much thinking, I decided to make a move. It is actually due to my failure the 1st time that makes me realised that I should have the courage to pursue what it may be the love of my life.

Truth to be told, I was as not attracted to him as compared to my senior. Perhaps this time, I am more cautious with my feelings. Still, I like him enough to let him know my feelings. This proves to be a correct move for if I wait for him to make the 1st move, we maybe need to wait till dunno which donkey year for him to muster his courage.

Having the experience of unrequited love, we know how important it is to treasure our partner. This is perhaps the reason why we managed to walk this far though not without obstacles.

So those who still do not have the courage to take the 1st step, go on and love someone who might not return your love, get hurt and healed. Then perhaps you will find the courage to pursue love actively the next time.

Sick and down but touched

Am not feeling very well for the past weeks due to a lot of factors. I guessed I bottled up too much till it all exploded at 1 go.

I fell sick. Fever, headache, body ache, sore throat and eyes swollen. All in 1 go. On top of it, my inner ear hurts too. Think am way to heaty.

Anyways doc prescribed antibiotics for me and told to get ample rest and drink lots of water. What's new?

I literally stuck myself to our sofa the whole day and keep sleeping the day away. With the swollen eyes, it is quite impossible to watch tv but I still switch it on for the sound.

Was suppose to meet my 3 sisters today but backed out due to the fever and swollen eyes, how am I suppose to go out in this state? Didn't even bother to go buy lunch today and just cooked some porridge.

I am quite upset by it as I brought xmas gifts for them and wanted to pass them tonight. And so, I told partner that I can only pass to them in Jan 14 when we meet for her birthday celebration.

Know how sweet my sisters are? The cancelled the gathering tonight and arranged for another day since I am down. So nice of them as everyone had found time amid their busy schedules to make time for tonight's meeting.

Felt bad for messing up their plans and touched at the same time for re-arranging the gathering to fit me in.

Looking forward to seeing them on boxing day:)

Back to my sofa now till hubs comes home with my dinner.

James Bond or Bong?

Hubs came out of shower 1 day and decided that he is James Bond.

The exact words of our conversation are as follow:

Hubs : " Hello, 老婆, 我是 Bond." All the while, he was posing with his fingers shaped like a gun.

I was watching running man on the bed and was not paying attention to him.

He got agitated and repeat a bit louder this time.

Its my turn to be agitated this time and I answered:

"Ya, you are Bong not Bond" (Bong is a word in hokkien that my mum always use which means punched)

" Your full name is Kiam Bong (Kiam in hokkien means owed but in this case is asking for so the 2 words add up to asking for a beating) not James Bond"

I got so amused by my joke that I stopped watching my show for a while and sat up laughing at him.

Who ask you to disturb me while I am watching my show?

Chilled Chicken (冰冻白斩鸡)

My mum in law was telling me this new recipe she learnt and taught me how to prepare. Sounds easy and thus I decided to try it out.

Ingredients:

Chicken thighs (I brought 3)

1 piece of ginger cut into slices ( I used more as I like the taste of ginger)
5 stalks of spring onion cut into big parts
Ginger and spring onion
Ice
4 caps of rice wine
3 teaspoons of salt
3 tablespoons of sesame oil

Cooking method:

1). Heat up 1 table spoon of sesame oil in a pan
2). Throw in the ginger slices and spring onions and stir fry till fragrant
Stir fry the ginger and spring onions

3). Put in the fried ginger and spring onion into a pot of water and bring to boil

Boil in a pot of water

4). Once water is boil, dip in the chicken thighs thrice before submerging them in the boiling water and let it boil for 20minutes.

5). In another pot, put in a layer of ice in the bottom of the pot.
6). Pour in 2 caps of rice wine and salt, place the boiled chicken
7). Put in 1 layer of ice on top of the chicken and pour in 2 more cups of rice wine.
8). Add in the sesame oil
9). Cover the lit and let it chilled for 20mins

Chilling the chicken

10). Cool at room temperature for 5 min and served

Verdict:

I am not sure whether I did not soak in the ice/rice wine long enough but the chicken is kinda bland. Didn't take in any of the rice wine or sesame taste. Was pretty disappointed with the results and my mum in law said this is an easy and tasty recipe.

Will experiment with longer chilling and cooling time the next round.

Ready to serve
